Here is a great tip for business owners with websites: Always own your web site domain! Never allow an outside service (such as IT service) to register your company’s web domain in their name. This was a lesson we learned the hard way. Here is the short story:

We have had our website www.smallbizspecialists.com for many, many years. We use it in our advertising, business cards and yellow pages. Several years ago we hired an IT company for a short 2 months. Somehow, and we are still trying to figure out how, they transferred our domain under their account. Now this really didn’t matter until the domain came up for renewal when we were told we were not able to renew because it wasn’t in our account. What? How could this IT Company take OUR domain name? These questions still remain unanswered but our domain registry service says it is as easy as having your login and password or we could have signed it over to them thinking we were just giving them access to communicate on our behalf. Because we could not get this IT service to release our domain name, we had to let our web site go into termination, then bid for it back in a public domain registry auction. Luckily we did get it back but it took us every bit of 3 months AND the cost of our website going down.

The moral of this story is to guard your domain name. Make sure you own your domain and if you don’t, take steps now to have the current domain owner release it over to you. Make sure if you add someone to your account that you are only adding as a Technical Contact.

We hope you can learn from our experience. If you find yourself in this situation, I can take you through the steps that I had to follow to get our domain back. Email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or phone 757-301-8388.
